2016: A year for change

It's February 2016 and what a wonderful time to pause and reflect on goals for the new year!

I find that those rushed new years resolutions in the last week of December are never really properly thought through for me and that by the end of the year, in the midst of rest and relaxation, the last thing that is on my mind are concrete plans for the new year.  January is the month I give myself to figure it all out...  some deep reflection and decision making, gathering what I've learnt and how I've grown and putting together the pieces for a fresh new cycle.

2016 is going to be a year of change.  It's already come with a few surprises, a couple of curve balls and some of it has been a little tough to cope with.  The one thing I always clutch onto is my faith that the universe has a place for all these things and even the not so good things in time become wonderful revelations of destiny down the line.  I am blessed with the best luck, with variety of influences and creative opportunities in life and when I remind myself that not a week actually goes by without some good news or other of things working my way, I learn not to take this life for granted and to focus on all the good and happy things that make life perfect.

2016 is going to bring a shift in the pace of things.  For some things, I feel like I'm on a slide:  I've had to let go of the sides and just ride it out, trusting I'll be ok in the end.  And for other things, I feel like I'm finally getting it.  I'm getting wiser - there is a strand of grey hair on my head (it really bothers me to be older at times) but I realise that I would never trade the last 10 years to be 19 again and lose all the life experiences I've gained.  I am getting life as an academic.  I love the opportunity to inspire others in more ways than I have ever before and it's a challenging, intellectual place to be, which makes me very fulfilled.

In September 2016, I'm going to be 30.  I'm not sure how I feel about that yet but I know plenty of people in their 30's and 40's who are cool, and as long as I don't lose my cool, it'll all be cool.  ;-)

What are your thoughts for this new year?  Whether you look at the past with happiness or regret, know that you are the leader of your life and your responsibility to yourself is to be happy.  I learned long ago that nobody else will (or even can!) give you that, so whatever it is you want to change, little or big, embrace change and take the risk.  It's difficult to do this, it may mean big life decisions, but you know what?  I don't know a single person who put their happiness in their own hands and left themselves high and dry.  So go for it and go be great.  Happy 2016 everybody!
