Union with friends

Nothing better than friends who are family.  One of my closest, Aamena and Mikaal spent the weekend with us after recently moving to Joburg.  We had such a great time showing them around Pretoria, antiquing and taking the ceremonial turn to enjoy the gardens and Madiba at the Union Buildings.

I love looking back at that weekend with nostalgia.  I haven't seen them in a little while and I can't wait for their next visit. :-)

Pretoria is pretty

The rains have fallen and Summer is here.  Being home for the Summer is lovely and I'm looking forward to a stay-cation.

Pretoria has hidden gems, secret beauty, hideaways and places here and there that only the locals know and love.

Can you spot where these were taken?

Pretoria a great place to be and if you ever find yourself in this side of the country, give the malls a skip and go on a treasure hunt for some of the loveliest things you'll ever see. ;-)

Trust Yourself

Sometimes there is that feeling you just can't explain.  The one that screams at you from inside telling you if something feels right or wrong, good or bad.  It can be a scary feeling:  one that throws you out of your comfort zone, one that tells you to be truthful to yourself.  You may tell yourself you are being silly and talk yourself out of it.  Never close your mind to your intuition.

I have opened my mind and heart to allowing myself to jump head first for my passions and it has helped me be happy, served me, rewarded me.

I've made mistakes, like going into business with the wrong type of people:  I should've listened to my gut, but I learned a valuable listen and when the voice screamed so hard to make my way out, I ran through the door.  I did and I'm happier.

My intuition has led me to where I am today and it's a pretty good life.  Do you want the same?  Image from Told You So.

Interiors: Bicycle on the Wall

Nothing sounds better right now than a breezy afternoon cycle around the neighbourhood, looking at the city in near-rain light and appreciating life and its simple pleasures.

With commercialised, instant and high speed entertainment becoming a thing of the past, people are searching for quality experiences that slow down life and give them a moment to breathe in the fresh air.  Having a bicycle is becoming trendy for this reason.  Apart from giving one the anytime chance to take a leisurely ride around the block, bicycles are also a bringer of aesthetics to the household.

Here are some ideas of beautiful ways to hang up your bike!

Bicycles are beautiful, take yours' out of the garage and hang it on a wall. That will be my summer project!

Places: Cape Town Blues

Cape Town is not like any other place.  Every where you look, there is beauty to be seen.  While we all know that this mostly revolves around the picturesque Table Mountain, there are many other breath taking natural and urban features to the mother city.

We visited in August to attend our friends' wedding and had a mini vacation of just under a week touring, eating, meeting friends and soaking up the West Coast. Here are some of my favourite snapshots of the beautiful places we saw, urban and natural.

Cape Town is a beautiful city.  If you visit South Africa, you would be missing out if you didn't go.  Please visit Gauteng as well!  Plenty to see, plenty to love <3

Hope you're having a great week friends!

October Desktop Wallpaper (free download!)

I love Spring, and to be honest, who doesn't?  Flowers, greenery and new life with perfect weather is a wonderful reminder of rejuvenation and a great time to experience change.

With a bit of Spring cleaning needed for my laptop, I decided to make myself a brand new desktop wallpaper that doubles up as a quick reference calendar.

I used floral elements from Design Cut and combined this with some excellent type and a charcoal grey background.

I hope this adds some brightness and cheer to the rest of your month.

To use the wall paper, save the image above, right click and use as a desktop wallpaper.  There you have it!  Please share with friends if you love it!

Super Best Vintage on Instagram

If you know me, which you sure do if you've been reading this blog, you'll know there are two things I spend lots of my free time on...  Cats & Antiquing.  Yeah, I know what you are thinking...  What? Youth & antiquing?  Yes!  Antique is totally on fleek right now and I realized that my love for vintage is almost like my love for cats: a bottomless subject topic of conversation with other fanatics but a "don't mention it" (really please don't) for other folk (also known as "dog people").

That is why I decided to create a second Instagram Account: @SuperBestVintage that focuses on old school cool only.  The profile is just for fun, mostly to share my finds and adventures antiquing with other vintage fans!

So, if  you know of a cool vintage spot in or around Gauteng or even South Africa, I'll be there like a bear, snapping pictures, posting them on Instagram with a lot of hashtags but not eating people and causing pandemonium like an actual bear would do (bear people, you're into some pretty weird stuff).

Which spots do you love?  I wanna know!  And... if you love all things vintage, go and be a super best pal and visit @superbestvintage!

Places: 27 Boxes, Melville, Joburg

I spent last Saturday with my dear friends Aamena and Mikaal.  Aamena and I have been friends for about 10 years.  We are so close and have the type of friendship where you can pick up where you left off after months of not seeing each other. Time passes and things changed, she lived in Cape Town for a while when we moved to Pretoria but we've stayed close over the years.  She now lives in Joburg and it's great to see her more often.

Last Saturday, we visited a park / shopping and food market space called 27 Boxes in Melville, Joburg.  Given the complaints one constantly hears about Gauteng, the lack of open space and its preoccupation with malls for recreation, we were pleasantly surprised and excited to come across 27 boxes.

27 Boxes is characteristic for being constructed with striking red shipping containers which stack in a way that allow container spaces to be used as shops.  The space also has plenty of outdoor areas, park furniture, and playground furniture for children to play.  Mikaal had a wonderful time climbing the containers.

The shop mix is quite exciting - we found some lovely designer clothing and décor as well as sweets, children's products, cosmetic products and an urban gardener where you can get plants which are grown from clippings.  We ate at Ritual - the potato curry was a complex balance of Indian flavours and the coriander garnish was nothing like I've tasted before - spicy & delicious!

It was a happy, sunny afternoon and I suggest you give it a go!  If you have kids, they will have a great time as well.

Recent Work (Illustration): Collab with In'Awe!

It's always wonderful to see my illustrations come to life in print!  When Helene from In'awe approached me about collaborating on a product design, I was so excited!

In'awe recently launched their first product range which comprises of high quality, beautifully detailed furniture, lighting and décor items.

My involvement was with providing illustrations for the cushions which suited the furniture range beautifully.  Helene of In'Awe carefully selected a textile base that was of great quality, durability and would take the screen printing of illustrations well.

These cushions come with duck down inners and are quite beautiful!  What do you think?

I turned 29!

My birthday is something I always look forward to.  It's a day of cake eating, birthday song receiving, non birthday suit wearing shenanigans.  Everyone sends you messages and you feel so special.

My birthday was officially last Monday, 7 September.  Turning 29 is a reminder of facing the facts:  I will become a 30 year old soon!  Being almost 30 could be devastating.  I'd love to be cool forever, a youth icon.  Perhaps I'll think back at 39 and laugh at myself for dreading my 30's.

The truth is, I feel like a giant kid still but I've become wiser, learned to understand myself, learn from my past, I pass on my knowledge and cherish the life experience my 20's have offered me!

I think of those closest to me and am thankful for my friends, my cats, my immediate family and most importantly, Suhale.  These relationships and life experiences have made me into a fully functional, independent giant kid. I suppose at 40, I'll be a more experienced kid. Here's to youth having no age!
