Interior Inspiration - Chalkboards

Happy Friday everybody!

I have great memories of times spent doodling with my sister on a massive chalkboard my parents put up in our childhood home.  We would spend hours making up cartoons, teaching each other "school" and scribbling.   Chalkboards are making a great comeback in the household in the traditional sense and in unconventional ways.  They are fun for children and adults.

Here are some ideas on how you could use chalkboards to enhance your home:

one / two / three / four / five / six / seven / eight / nine / ten

- Paint entire walls in chalkboard paint.  Without chalk, this becomes an accent wall.  In the kitchen, jot down shopping lists, menus and what's cooking.
- Paint an old piece of furniture with chalkboard paint.
- A DIY chalkboard organiser in your entrance hall can be a useful and homely element in your house.
-Typographical elements add bold personality to a space and can be changed easily.
- Chalkboard paint on containers and buckets is a versatile  labeling system.

Celebrate Everyday

Mondays really can take it out of us - that overwhelming thought that there are five days to get through before the weekend can be demotivating and dreadful.  If you find yourself thinking that way every Monday, a change is in order!

Source Unknown

Find something everyday to celebrate.  Don't spend life wishing away the bulk of it.  Take some time to do something you love, something new and make each day memorable.

Happy Monday!  Happy Everyday!

Creative App - Photography : Split Pic

Split Pic is a free photography app that allows you to compose multiple images into one frame using the various composition grids in the standard templates.  You can choose to leave the grids pronounced or merge two images by blurring the grid lines.  Either take photos directly from the app, or upload photos from your camera roll.  The positions of the grid lines can also be adjusted.  Additional templates are available as in app purchases.  Once you're done, you can put on a filter and share to instagram / save on your device.

As you can imagine, (depending on the user), an app like this can be used to create bizarre compositions of 2 images:

A photo collage:

Or an abstract composition:

Here are a few of my favourite examples done by other users, found on the "featured" section of the Split Pic App:

There are some utility issues with this app, though.  The image you visualise may not always be possible - the zoom in and zoom out is fussy and there is no rotation of images option.  That can be frustrating, as well as the pop up adverts which appear out of the blue.

If you love cell phone photography, however, this app offers great opportunities to be more creative with your images.

What would you Split Pic?

Woodlands Cupcake Toppers - Free Printable

Who doesn't love a good old fashioned cupcake?  Individual mini-cakes wrapped and topped with pretty icing and decorations make for a yummy and beautiful treat.  It's no wonder cupcakes are replacing large birthday cakes and wedding cakes.

I put together a printable, which I hope can assist you in making your cupcake decorating a little more pretty.  Using the woodland creatures I hand-drew on my iPad, I composed 3 circular toppers with primary colour backgrounds which you can print, cut out, fold and stick to a toothpick and pin into your freshly iced cake.

The cupcake image comes from the yummy website called Cooking Classy - you can find the recipe for the pictured cupcakes here.

Get your FREE PRINTABLE!

If you use the printable, I'd love to see a picture so feel free to send me one.

Beautiful Find - Finite Pop Up Furniture Shop

Last Friday, I was lucky enough to visit the Finite Pop Up Shop in Brooklyn Mall, Pretoria.

If you haven't heard of Finite, yet, it is a curation of locally designed furniture pieces arranged in a pop up (temporary) store.  All pieces are for sale and showcase the amazing South African, Pretoria based design talent.

The shop is curated by the friendly Loraine Beaton, a local multi-talented creative who has a theatre background.  We seem to overlap often in our interests.  Loraine will be hosting an improvisation workshop called "Prompt" which I hope to join once it's up and running.

Here a few photos I took at Finite:

All of the pieces are of exceptional quality and very well priced, true keepsakes.  If you are in Pretoria, go have a look.  You'll love what you see!

I'd love to hear from you, please leave a comment.

Happy Mother's Day + Free Card Printable

Hello there!  My internet is finally up and running and so am I, frantically catching up on posts ;-)

It is Mother's Day today, which is a wonderful day for us all to commemorate the one person who has made us who we are - Mom.  I have wonderful memories of my childhood moments, and all of those include my mom, who did everything to make us happy.

Thanks Ma!

--

I visited Woolworths this week and was really amused to see a dad carting around three distracted children in a shopping trolley whilst cluelessly baffling over a fluffy pink cardigan just around the corner from actual Mother's Day merchandise.  Although he looked so awkwardly out of place, I thought it was very sweet of a husband to take the time to try to purchase a Mother's Day gift for his wife on behalf of his 3 young children whose minds were only on Easter Eggs.

I thought it would be sweet to put together a little card and envelope printable that you can use to write a special message to your mom.  I used a soft pink and mint palette, which hints at floral tones.

I'd love to see how you used the printable, so if you do, feel free to send me a picture!

If you are a mom, well done & have a Happy Mother's Day!

Beautiful Find - The Rogue and The Wolf

Hello Readers!  I am back from my island holiday and ready to share with you some fresh inspiration and outlook!  The next few weeks are going to be super busy which also means I'm super blessed.  Comedy, Design and Production is all happening at once and I'm refreshed and ready to get cracking.

Today's beautiful find is The Rogue and The Wolf, a whimsical brand that combines animals / animal elements with metallic, accent, grey and white palettes in unusual jewelry, decor and accessories.

Here are a couple of my favourite pieces:

I love the wild, woodlands and almost dark feeling of their pieces.  The plastic jewelry in accent colours adds an unexpected touch to the untamed quality of the pieces.  I would love to get myself that cat skull ring!

Have a look at The Rogue and The Wolf on Etsy! They ship worldwide!

Just Start

A big challenge of following a dream is overcoming the overwhelming feeling that this is all too much and too big to bring together in the time and resources we have.  For those times, this is solid advice:

Quote from Design Milk

You are one person and can do great things, but only if you take it one step at a time.  Being resourceful, having perspective and breaking up goals is a sustainable way of achieving a greater goal.

Go out there, don't worry about the what if's and just start. You can do it!
